MAORI SPORTS AT CLIVE
Attractive Programme for Easter Monday On the eouth side of the Ngaruroro rlver-mouth, and half-way between Napier and Hastings, a new; sports-ground has been formed. These grounds are only half a mile from Clive, and a good motor road has been formed right on to the ground. Tho aTea is about 25 acres, and in the midst of thiis area a suitable sports cval is now in coursa of formation. These new grounds will be opened on Easter Monday by a programme which is unique in the histoiry of Hawke 'a Bay, for many of the Maori items have never been seen in tiris district before. As the Sports Grounds Company has placed its grounds at the f ree disposal of the Maori people at Kohupatiki to assist them in the development" of their village, the Maoris are putting on a programme which is snre to attract a large concourse of people. In addition to the Maori' items, there are other events which will attract sportsmen of all descriptions, including horse- jumping, dog-racing, aquaplaning, rowing, launch race and motor-cyelo *ace. The Maoris are conducting somo canoe races and/ what is likely to be the most attractive of all, the Maori canoe hurdle races. The Maoris of the district are taking a keen interest and doing all they can .to make the day a memorable one. A canteen vgill be open on the grounds, and a "hangi" will be made in which a whole bullock will be cooked in' the old-time earth oven. • A meeting of the committee was held at Mr Fred Hellyer's residence on Monday evening, when the following members were present: Bishop Bennett (chairinan), Messrs Ike Eobin, Bob Tutaki, Geo. Chadwiek, J. A. Miller, F. Hellyer, Eev. Sam Eangiihu. Mr Hellyer was appointed treasurer in place of Mr G. Thornton, who resignued on account of absence during Easter., The pasition of permanent seeretary was deferred until a late meeting, the orgnisers, Messrs Bob Tutaki, Ike Eobin and J. A. Miller, to take np the secretarial dntles meanwhile. A donation of £1 1/- was made by Mr Hellyer for a fourth dog event. Inquiries are to be made about insurance for accident and for a wet day. Mr Ike Eobin is to arrange for a ball in the Assembly Hall, Hastings, on Easter Monday night.
