PALMERSTON N. Last Night. The general committee of the Manui watu A. and P. Assoeiation yesterday decided to conduct a raffle of a pony ia order to augmeut its fund but it found' a staunch opponent, on a matter of.' priuciple, in Mr. A. C. B. Munro, o£Ohingaiti. ' 'From the spiritual side I am against' it," he deelared. "Do you mean t» say this assoeiation is going to come down to a raffle, because some other assoeiation has done so? I would sponer be without the mouey." Mr. T. E. Hodder voiced similar views. He questioned whether the assoeiation would be allowed to takai the pony around. Mr. J. A. Nash: We would so long aS we have a permit. Mr. E. A. Shand: We want mouey inj this assoeiation, don't we? We hav0 £15,000 in debts and wheu we get a chance to get it, we should grab at it. Mr. Munro; I think it is cruel. Every child loves a-pony and we all love. children. How many disappointments are we going to bring to homes? Thechildren are going to their money boxes and mauy are going to be dis® appointed. There is a spirit in ^thia country to-day of getting as much aA oue can for nothing. I can't bear t«N thiuk of this assoeiation having % raffle that will bring disappointmentJ It is gambling, aud wrong. Why notj start a Monte Carlo? I say we don'tj waut that money." Mr. Munro raised his voice agaiusti the motion when it was put to ti®1 meeting. Mr. A. (J. Vilu said the Marton A»' and P. Assoeiation had a pony raffle and hoped to clear £200.
