FAST, OPEN POLO

Final Trial Before Selection of Tourney Teams SMALL MARGIN Good, i'ast, open polo was the order of the day on Saturday at the Hastings racecourse, and with the selectors viewing the iast trial before final selection' of teams for the tournament players were doing their best. Games were played oetween chosen teains of as near as possible equal' strength, and consequently there was a very small margin in most of the spells. Tb-day a side co.mprising J. J. Gatenby (back), Wai Ormond (No. 3), John Ormond (No. 2) and Harold MacKenzie (No. l)is leaving for Masterton lo play on Wednesday. This side played together on Saturday and combined very well. Playing against the A team, a very good game resqlted. At the opening pretty play between Harold MacKenzie and Wai Ormond took play upfield, but the shot at goal missed. From a good centre by Bill Sherratt the A team carried the play to the touring side's line, but J. Lyons missed the goal by inches. Piay continued to range from one end of the field to the other, and eventually Bo"b MacKenzie, after some nice work, put the A team in the lead with a beautiful goal. The touring side equalised when John Ormond made no mi8take with a well-directed hit. The game ended with J. J. Gatenby taking tae ball upfield and putting the touring side on the attack. A game against the B team had to be abandoned after J. J. Gatenby had scored owing to John Johnston 's ,recelving injuries which necessitated his leaving the field. Mention must be madq, of Tony Eobson's brilliant goal in the B v. E game. A slashing hit taken at full gallop from -50 yards out left no doubt whatever -of the result. The final selection of teams for the tournament will be made during the week and will appear in this paper on Friday.
