Man Cleared on Attempted Murder Charge GUILTY OF ASSAULT

NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. William Joseph Fox was acquittea in the Supreme Court to-day on the major charge of attempting to murder Detective Patrick Kearney, but was foundi guilty oj aggravated assault asd remanded for sentence till Friday. The charge arose from the reception" given on a farm near Whangamomona, when Detective Kearney and Constable Johnson visited Fox to interview himconcerning an allegation of bigamy.! Fox met them with a loaded rifle and; after a long argument, during which Fox held the police at bay, a shot wasi fired. The police left Fox without com-: pleting the interview but Fox was lateri persuaded to surrender to the police. It was contended For the defenco, fori which no evidence was called, that Fox! fired the shot merely with them inten-l tion of frightening the police. x 1
