THE STATE PLACEMENT SERVICE.

The official opening of new offices in Hastings for conduct of the activities of the State Placement Service draws local attention to a system instituted by the present Government which is proving of widespread benefit. This may be said with regard not onily to those for whom employment is found through this agency but also to the payers of unemployment taxation, who, it may perhaps be hoped, will eventually be afforded some consequential relief. So far as can be ascertained the work of the Placement Offic has been very thoroughly organised throughout the Dominion and is being carried on in a way that is not only fully competent but is also deeply sympathetic. As is shown by the figures cited in the report of this forenoon's opening ceremony the Placement Office has succeeded in finding work for a very large number of men who otherwise might still have remained idle and many of them at least a charge upon the Unemployment Fund. These figures, of course, liave to be read with due regard to the possibility that the same name may be counted more than once, and also with some uncertainty as to what is, for the purpose of these statistics, deemed to be "permanent" employment. In any event, however, it can be taken That the scheme has done a very great deal towards helping many of those eager for work to find it. For this, if for no other reason, it is worthy of the fullest possible support and encouragement from private citizens who have employment, even of the most casual kind, to offer. The Chief Placement Officer has set out his appeal very cogently and it is for the citizens of Hastings to make as cordial and effective a response as possible. There are many odd jobs that need doing and the Placenient Office will quickly find the right men to do them, and it is a case where every little helps. *
