The fields were again good and the totalisator turnover, despite two big dividends, showed a substantial increase. The course has never been in better order and the racing was good with a numher of keenly-fought finishes, particularly in the Autumn and Telegrapk Handicaps, in which the margins were very smalL The prlncipal event was won by Arctic King, whoso first day form was such that he drifted away from favourite to seventh in the betting order. The open sprint was won by Sir Nigel and the two-year-old event by Smoke Screen. jNOVIOE PLATE, of £80; 5J furlongs.J l 9 TARO (F. ' (Winner trained by owner, Awapuni.) Werohia 's Half-brother Pays a Price. There waa a "boil over" in the Novice Plate, which was won by Werohia 's little fancied half-brother, Taro, the winner 's dividend being a substantial one. i Gironde, the favourite, was beaten into third place, Race Call getting iecond money. Colleen Gain once broke -through the tapes but when the starter. sent them away Colleen Gain went south instead of north and took no parti dn the race. Others slow to begin were! Seacourt and Southem Blood. : Taro was aoon in front and he ledj into the straight followed by Race Call, Royal Portrait, Gironde, Seacourt and Southefn Blood, with Aurora 'a Lovej coming through. Race Call immediately| issued a challenge to Taro and in a punishing finish Taro hung on to win by a good length. Gironde finished! -strongly a couple of lengths further back, just in front of Aurora 's Love,,and Armidale, Glynne Park, Royal Por-, trait and Sonthern Blood. ; Spender Just Beats War Lap. Inheritance was favourite for the High-weight but he finished sixth, and he never looked like having a chance. ;The winner was the second favourite who had to finish very solidly to catch War Lap, who made a bold effort to slip the field. j War Lap, Paroto, Tail Light, Inherijtance and Spender led out of the I straight and when they xeached the Iback stretch War Lap drew out to a six lengths lead. Jenkins gave him 3 breather crossing the top and War Lap turned for home with Tail Light fairly handy, then Trevelyn Hold, Puroto, Spender, Padnos and Inheritance. Once in line for the judge War Lap again drew away but Spender set after him.' and in an exciting finish caught War Lap just short of the post to win by aneck. Tail Light, four lengths back,. hung on to beat Puroto, and the next to finish were Trevelyn Hold and Inheri-' tance. • Arctic King Pays Surprisingly Big Dividend. Favourite for the Woodville Handicap on the first day and beaten out of a place after having every chance, Arctic King was neglected for the Autumn Handicap but ha prevailed in a thrilling finish after a desperate battle with Master "Cyklon and the favourite, Mandamus. Lapel, squeezed out, Biegmund and Geitel wore last to leave the mark, the early leader being Master Cyklon, from Mandamus, Full Throttle, Werohia and Helen Ford. Taumau xan up behind Master Cyklon and Mandamus on the turn, and Waipiro joined Helen Ford and Werohia, otherwise the order was the same into the back. Taumau had charge crossing the top and he led into the straight followed by Mandamus, Helen Ford, Master Cyklon, Waipiro, ATctic King and Round Score. Mandamus wa* in charge at the distance and Master Cyklon had displaced him in the lead when Arctic King swept np on the outer and in a splendid battle Arctic King got the verdict from Master Cyklon by a short neck with Mandamus a similar distance away third. Lapel finished from well back into fourth place, and the next home were Waipiro and Round Score! The winner paid a double-flgure dividend. The time for. the race wa* 1.56 1-5 and they eut the last mile out in 1.40 1-5. Attractive Win by Smoke Screen. Geira was favourite for the Debutani Stakes but she was beaten into second place by the brilliant Limond— Curtain gelding, Smoke Screen, who collared Geira at the distance and went on to win decisively. Geira and Smoke Screen were first to break the line and running to the three furlongs mark Geira was four lengths ahead of ' Smoke Sereen, with a gap of eix lengths to the others, who were running together. Smoke Screen was "closing on Geira as they turned foi home and Geira was soon nnder i*resBure. Smoke Screen, galloping very smoothly, went on to win by three lengths, and Geira was four lengths ahead of Gay Molly and Son and Heir. Blue Garter Just Beats Sanfoy. The Sansfoy — Royal Solo brackel was favourite for the Maharahara Handicap, but Blue Garter, hard ridden by B. H. Morris, got up in time to win by a head. Bumble was slow away and Sansfoy, Myriam and All Spirit soon showed out ahead of Lord Quick, Laggard, Blue Garter, Royal Solo and Parry. All Spirit, led into the straight with Sans-
foy and Myriam next, and Blue Garter and Lerd Quick were just in behind them. Sansfoy and Myriam soon ran past All Spirit and they were having a good tussle when Blue Garter joined issue, Blue Garter winning by a head from Sansfoy with MyTiam a length ifurther away. All Spirit was fourth 'followed by Parry and there was a gap to the others. Sir Nigel Improves. Sir Nigel was favourite for the open sprint and he duly landed. He was last but one at the home turn but he finished with a rattle to catch Land Tax right on the post. Severe was first out but she gave way to Symcony and Fulojoy who led into the straight followed by Land Tax and Severe. Land Tax then tackled and ran past the others on the outer and she looked likely when Sir Nigel, with a eustained run, got up to beat her by a short neck. Severe was third two * lengths away and Bun Fight was fourth followed by Bodyline and Plato. There was an inquiry after the race and J. Dooley, apprentice rider, who was on Land Tax, was stood down for a month for crossing and causing interference near the straight entrance. Game Effort by King's Lancer. ? King's Lancer was favourite for the Victoria Handicap but at the bottom of the straight Corroboree ■ was going eo well in front that he looked like the winner. King's Lancer, however, finished very gamely and he wore down Corroboree and won by half a length. The field had not gone far before; Corroboree had charge and he was well clear of King's Lancer when they turned into the back. The position was unaltered to the far turn where Revival was the whipper in. When the straight wa* reached it resolved itself into a duel between Corroboree and King's Lancer and the latter gamely carried his baekers through. Windward was third a length and a quarter away fr6m Corroboree and Revival wa* fourth. riammaxion All the Way. Flammarion, first time out for some considerable time, was never headed in the concluding event, ^ which he won well from Royal Record and Mister Quex. Silver River was favourite but the best he could do wa* finish fifth. The early order was Flammarion, from Silver River, Royal Record, Mohua and Helios, with Quake going up. Mister Quex improved crossing the top and he followed Flammarion into the straight ahead of Rioyal Record and f Silver River, with Mohua comingj I through. In the run to the judge Royal' Record tackled the leader and Flammarion was doing his best to win by a length from Royal Record. Mister Quex was a short length away third and Mo- ! hua wa* fourth. Next were Silver iRiver and Blue Mauritius,
