t ri - -t« Whakarire and Hapa! 840,000 TONS" HANDLED Since commencing its operations in the development of tbe BreakWater barbour ac Napier tbe dredge Whakarire bas handled a total of 795,425 tons of material. At to-day 's meeting of tbe Napier Harbour Board tbe engineer, Mr G. W. B. Lowson, feported upon tbe work of tbe dredging during tbe period from Jahuary 7 to February 3 as follows:— "Tbe bucket dredger Whakarire was engaged tbrougbout tbe greater part of tbe period bringing Cuts Nos. 6 and 7 insbore at a low-water depth of 18 feet tbrougb country overlaid witb boulders. Later on, tbe dredging of tbe uncompleted portion of tbe western balf of cut No. 5 was resumed in conjunction witb the aforesaid cuts. Dredging tbrougb tbe boulder reef bas latterly been particularly slow, witb a corresponding reduction in tbe Whakarire 's output. However, cut No. 5 bas, at the time of writingj been bfought to within lts inshore limit, and its battering off sbould be completed within tbe next two days or so. Cuts Nos. 6 and 7 haVe also been brought well inshore. "Tbe weather was by no means favourable at all times for dredging, range and choppy seas considerably interfering with tbe work. Quite a number of buckets were ehanged also at different times, and tbe total stoppages for tbe montb amounted in all to about seven working days. "During tbe same period tbe Auckland Harbour Board 's dredger Hapai was engaged in deepening tbe swinging area beyond the ends of tbe proposed No. 3 whaff and tbe Glasgow Wharf and also tbe area between tbe No. 3 wbarf site and tbe Glasgow Wharf to a low-water deptb of 30 feet. Tbe Hapai 's returns, wbicb brought tbe vessel's total output since coming to Napier up to 44,427 tons, Were 28,300 tons for tbe montb."
