Winner trained by owner, Hastings. Decisive Win for Gironde. Thpre wero .17 starters in the Maiden Plate, and the winner was the favourite, who was always in front. Glynne Park was with him at the home turn but in the run to the judge Gironde drew away nicely and won .by three lengths- from Aurora 's Love and Parry. The field took time to get.away and when they did go Glynne Park was f oilowed by ' Gironde, Aube, Armidale, Aurora 's Love and Stargono. There was not much alteration crossing the top and Gironde 'and Glynne Park tnrn-ed-for home followed by Aube, Aurora 'g Love,- Royal Portrait, ' Armidale and Stargono with Geelong very wide out. Nothing had a chartce of getting the favourite but fhere was a good go for second and Aurora 's Love just hung on long enough to beat. the fast-. finishing Parry by half a head. Royal; Portrait was fourth just ahead of Southern Blood, and Glynne Park, Aube and Inheritanee being next. ; Padnos Pays a Price. Windward was favourite for the highweight but. two "set backs" settled whatever chance he had of win-j uing, and the dividends were returnedj by Padnos, who finished well, and Spender. There were seven starters, the early order, with the pace definitely not on,. being Blue Mauritius and Windward. Going dowh the baek stretch Rioghail was with Blue Mauritius ahe,ad of Spender, Windward and Count . Willonyx. Count Willonyx moved forward at the five, also Padnos, and the order into the straight was Blue Mauritius, Eioghail and Count Willonyx together, Windward, Spender and Padnos. Windward reeeived a chcck soon after turning for home and at the distance Padnos commenced the run which landed him at the post a short length ahead of Spender, who beat Windward by a neck. Blue Mauritius was fourth and Count Willonyx fifth. Rona Bay Finishes Solidly. Arctic King was favourite for tho Woodville Handicap but he was beaten out of the money, the winner being the Trentham-trained mare, who took charge at the five:furlongs and stayed in front to the finish, beating Master Cyklon and Round Score by. a length and and a half. • •• Master Cyklon, Helen Ford and Werohia were prominent early and there was iittle pace on for two furiongs. Approaching the five Rona Bay went to the front apd at the half mile she was followed by Master Cyklon, Werohia, Arctic King, , Taumau and Waipiro. | There was little alteration as ihey | crpssed the top and the order, except that Waipiro had moved up to fifth, was the same into the ktraight. In the run to the judge Rona Bay never looked lite stopping and she won well by over a length. Master Cyklon, under pressure, hung on to. hold off the fastfinishing Round Score by half a head, and Helen Ford jiist got fourth from Geitel aud Arctic King. . Courtcraft Begins his Racing Career. The highrpriced Limond — Homage colt, Courtcraft, owned by Mr. W. H. .Gaisford, was a firm favourite for the iSapling Stakes, despite the fact that it, was his first outing under silk. , .Courtcraft won after beihg one of the last away, and Son and Heir was .second, Son and Heir's chances not having been improved when, prior to the gtart, he -went through the tapes and galloped some six furiongs before being brought to a standstilL. Son and Heir had galloped over three furiongs when his rider, T. Green, parted company with him, and the clerk of the course fiualjy indueed the colt to give up his unofficial try-out. This gallop must have taken aomething out of Son and Heir but ne made a bold bid for victory, getting to within .a length and a half of Courtcraft,-' who was being shaken up over the last furlong. Red Cockade and Courtcraft were last away, Son and Heir being the early leader from Gay Molly and Orient Dawn. Courtcraft did not waste any time when .he did get going and he was in front at the half mile, leading into the straight followed by Son and Heir, Orient Dawn, Peach King and Ga.v Molly. In the run to the judge Court craft and Son and , Heir drew awa) : from the others and Courtcraft wo; nicely. by a. length. Son and Heir wa six lengths in front of Peach King an Gay Molly and Orient Dawn were neil Courtcraft '» win maxked th» Pavj-
i' : jitable's twelfth tuccess in two-year-oldS iraces this season. Game Eff ort by Old Surrey. ! Sansfoy, Old Surrey and Blue Garter iwere baeked in that order for the Pre- ; 'sident's Handicap and they filled the plaees, the winner being the Awapunitrained Old Surrey, who hung on very gamely to beat Blue G&rtei; by a head with Sansfoy only half a length further away. Appendage, Old Surrey, Sansfoy, Blue Garter, Laggard and Lord Quiek was the order following a good atart, and Old Surrey took charge after- a couple of furiongs to show the way to the straight. When they turned for [home Blue Garter was in second -plaee iahead of Sansfoy and Laggard, and in the run to the judge challenges were jissued by Blue Garter and Sansfoy. Atl jthe distance it looked as'if Blue Garter iwould nrevaii but Old Surrey*. beauti[fully handled by Tattersall, had some-j ithing in reserve, and he won narrdwly] 'with a fine finishing effort. Sansfoy! was almost in line third and Laggard! was well back fourth. Alhy Scores in Blanket Finish. j There was a blanket finish in the; [open sprint and Alby, Mandamus, Karl! land Sir Nigel, in that order, flaehei ipast the judge almost ia line. Bodyline dwelt when the barrier went up, Karl, Mandamus and Alby being first to break the line. Full; Throttle soon ran up. ahead of Alby> who waa followed by Bun Fight, Siegi mund and Land Tax. Crossing .tho top "the order was Kari, Land Tax, Man- ; darnns, Siegmund, Alby, Bun Fight aud j Lord Moutoa, and Sir Nigel was last. There was no change into the straight and Land Tax and Mandamus immedi- , ately tackled the leader. Then Alby swept up and took the lead and fifty yards from the post lie looked like win■piTig decisively. Mandamus then made his bid, and with Karl still going on with it and Sir Nigel coming with a rattle a thrilling finish resulted, Alby; winning by a head from Mandamus with Karl half a neck further back, a head in front of Sir Nigel. There was a gap of lengths to Darecourt ahead ofi Land Tax and Lord Moutoa. Maestro WinB in Good Time. I Corroboree was a firm favourite for J the Kumeroa Handicap but he could not go on with it when asked to make the effort and he finished out of the money. The winner wa® Maestro, w«o .finished solidly to beat King's Lancer iby over a length. The order wa® much the same all through the running with King's Lancer and Maestro making the pace and Waitohu, Convivial, Corroboree and Revival were following in that order. The [field closed up a bit three furiongs fromhome and everything had a chance at' the bottom of the* straight. Maestro,, howe'ver, hit the front and stayed there, winning well from King's Lancer, wno was two lengths ahead of Convlvial. [Revival finished on in fourth place and [Corroboree was next. Best Price of Day. The best price of the day was paid by jSil'ver.River, the winner of the concludling event. Rustem was favourite and Catalogue second choice and Catalogue j finished second and Rustem was beaten jout of the money. t War Lap was the early leader from iSilver River, Quake, Royal Record and Catalogue, and this order was maintained throughout. Once heads were turned for home Silver River ran up to War Lap and with Catalogue and later Quake joining issue the finish promised to be a close one. Silver River, however, drew out over the final bit, and won by a length from Catalogue. Quake was a head away third and, War Lap was fourth, followed by Tupai and Gladium.
