RECORD UNBROKEN

• Ian DriscoH's Two-Mile Walk NAPIER ATHLET1CS The Napier' Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held ita twelfth cliib night of the. present season on McLean Park last evening. The attendance was- the larges.t so far this Beason, and the large crowd of apectators were rewarded by seeing some very Rne contests'.' . The main attraction of the evening was . the attempt of Ian Driscoll, present .New Zealand champion walker, upon the two-miles walking record put up b.y s Frank Creamer, of . Auckland, many years ago. Unfortunately Driscoll was handicapped by "having . a «trong wind to contend with' in each dap, and this caused him to ■ b.ecome more. fatigued in ,the last mile than he would otherwise have been, and he failed by 7 4-5 secs to equal the record and by eight seconds to break the record, At the end of ' the first. mile, dohe in 6 inins. 52 secs., Driscoll was well within a margin' which' gave him an ospecially good chanee of becoming a re-cord-holder, but even then the wind had commenced to affect the walker. Under all the .circumstances Driscoll put up a very fine" performanco indeed, ahd he so inipressed Mr E. W. Leslie, of Wellington, one of the judges of walking and than whom there is no better judge of walking in the Dorniniori, that Mr Leslie stated his belief tfiat not 'only was Driscoll tKe best amatepr walker in the world to-dayj . but that. with a . good traek and cairn weather he would get down ,to 14 mins. for the two .miles. . Another fine performance " was that of Frank . Sharpley in the' 120 yards hurdles. Giving long starts to good huxdlirs, Sharpley mowed . down . the opposition and won handsomely in the good time of 15 3-5 secs'., which is 2-5ths of a second outside.of tho New Zealand record" of 15 1-5 secs., held jointly by H. E. Wilson and R. W. Lander. The wind made a slight differenco to Sharpley 's time also. Xn the lap-dash • cycl.e "event, J. Hutchinson put up a ndw track record of 33 set>s., which beats the time put uj. by the New Zealand champion eyclist, Giles,. of. Canterbury. Large fields tiirned out for al] the events, and some very thrilling finishes were witnessed. It was altogether a splendicl evening 's sport, and a very snccessful meeting.
