From
WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. -To ensure the protection of 70 homes in the low-lying area of Waipukurau -froai the mehace of future floods, the Waipukurau Borough Council intends carrying out a scheme of river control shortly. Since last March there has been considerable agitation for improved river control, but at a conference of local bodios last January no- agreement eould be reached and an offer of £650 from the Minister of Puhlic Works, the Hon. R. Semple, towards the cost of ' a preliminary survey, had to be refusejd. The Wa.ipUkurau Borough Council, in its estimates this year, nuts aside £100 for the purpose, but ' the scheme now proppsed by the engineer, Mr. H. B. Smart, involving the construction of a stop-bank three-quarters of a- mile long, is cstimated to cost about £1000. Mr. Smart 's idea is to .construct a stop-bank between the railway and' traffic bridges which -would continue down the river bank for about half-a-mile. The total length of the bank would be approximateiy three-quarters of a mile. It would be- about four feet wide on top,- the .width of its base varying aceording to the height. The slope would be one in one.
