Inter-CIub Swimming Againsl Gisborne WATKINS MAKES RECORD The Fergusson, a trophy competed for annually between the representatives of the Heretaunga and Gisborne swunnhng and life-saving clubs, was retained by Boi'taunga last nigbt when that club defeated Gisborne by 15 points to eight in the Maddison Bath3, Hastings. Though the points margin appears substantial, the actual eompetition was excepticnally keen, the result restiug on tho water polo match for whicn sevdii po«nts wero awarded. In the race ovents eaeh club secured eight points, the teams' race beiug the outstanding event of the evening. h'rom the very outset the going was even, the respective competitors keeping abreast of eacb other, and Heretaungia finally drew ahead over the last yard to win by a touch, the crowd being in a state of intense excitement. The evening was notable for the nnmber of excitmg finjshes, eeveral of the handicap eveats providing real thriils, and altogether it was one of the most successtiir carnivals that have been held for the trophy. The best individual performance was that of R. Watkins of Mahora, who swam a solo 440 yards to set a new provincial record of 5mins>. 32 2-5secs. At the outset, Mr A. I. Rainbow, presidenet of the Centre, and also of the Heretaunga Club, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and congratulated them on winning the Heraid Shield at the championships earlier in the week.
