Hastings Placed Third in First Selection JUDGE'S PRAISE

NELSON, Last Nighi I' Twelve bands competed in the first B. I grade Test selection to-night. There. was a small attendance due to a coli wind. No points were given, only the positions being announced. Wellington bands figured prominently, securing : first and second places. , The judge (Mr. Kerry) said he hadj 'been surprised at the B grade playingj after the playing in the hymn the previous night. The band placed first gav&i ja creditable performance teclhnical, tunefnl and artistic. He had no hesitation in pntting it first and it would compare f avonrably with B grade bands jin Australia. ■ The placings were as follows:— ilnstitnte Silver (Wellington)^ Welling ton Mnnicipal Tramway, Hastings Citi' zens, * Greymouth Civic, Christchurch Mnnicipal, Westport Mnnicipal andt Palmerston North City Silver (equal),J 'Cambridge Mnnicipal, Danevirke Muni-. / cipal, Marlborough Monnted Eifles, Nel-5 ' gon Citizens, Takaka Citizens. Boys' Solo and Tlngel Horn. The jndges v/ere pleased with the iwork of the soloists in the boys' solo :and flugel horn events in the band con-3 test. There was a large entry for the former. The first event was won by Lloyd Lee (Te Awamntn Mnnicipal) 91, H. Croucher (Hawera Mnnicipal) 89, R. Francis (St. Kilda) 88, D. Christiansonj '(Greymouth Mnnicipal) 88, P. Gleni (Kaikorai) 88. .The flugel horn results were:— Ward! .(Institute Silver, Wellington) 86, G.i Lowry (Timaru) 76, A. Anderson (Wan-|. lganui Garrison) 74. ' i The judge said the winner'k treat-j (meut was most artistic and the playingJwas the best . he had ever heard' •in his life. It was most pleasing to. meet an artist in the tme sense of the word. He expressed pleasnre at the ilarge number taking paft and advised •icompetitors to go in for deeper mouthinieces. Quartets and B Flat Solo. Oommenting on the quartets, 'Mf> Kerry said •"there had been- some- very waried iiterpretations. The best two quartets, aa far as tone and tnne.were' concerned, had been beaten by interpre* tation. Speaking.onfhe B flat solo, Mr. Good; all said that the playing in this section was very poor although the test piece was not hard. The greatest fault right jthrongh was lack of tempo. It . was jsupposed to be taken very resolutely, jand determine.dly bnt instead it had! ibeen rendered very quietly.
