RECORDS BROKEN
Hawke's Bay Swimming Cliampionships NEW JUNIOR TIMES Five provrncial l'ecords went by the board in the first day of the Hawke's Bay provincial swimming championships held at the Napier Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon and evening. All the records. were in the scboolgirls' and echoolboys' events, one of the records being broken twice and another being equalled. The water was very cold, and it is thougiht that this disadvantage removed, times in the longer races would have improved accordingly, but as the position is at present the meeting has been productive of some of the best junior swimming seen in the Napier baths for some .years. Entries in these events were good, with few scratchings, and. a spirit of keenness characterised the swimming. Points during the evening for ihe Hawke's Bay Herald points cup saw Gisborne, with 34 points, establish a lead of six over the nearest competitor, Mahora. Te Awa and Heretaunga are next with 14 points each, followed by Havelock Nortix with six, and Napier with tbrea. Further changes will re» sult fri f to-night's races, but Gisborne hu.e established a comfortabie lead that will be hard to beat. The attendance at the meeting was disappointing, althoug|h the cold weather may have been the cause of this, and it is hoped that with an improvement to-day, the meeting to-night will be both better attended and productive of faster swiipming. Mr J. Vigor Brown was present at the baths to declare the meeting fonnally open. In a brief speech he congratulated the clubs on the fine entries that had been received and wished for the success of the championships. He also referred to the recent visit of the Australian surf team, and to ihe value of swimming and life-saving generally. All races were run off promptly and the public kept informed of results and progress by a broadcasting system, the greatest credit being due to the officials for the organisation of the meeting. Records were broken in the 26 yards schoolgirls' championship and the 100yards schoolgirls' championship by Miss K. Henderson, of the Gisborne High School, who showed promise of doveloping into a champion swimmer, and in the 150 yards and 50 yards schoolboys' championship by B. Bridge, Mahora. In the latter race, Bridge broke the record in his heat, while the time for the-final also broke the previous record. Miss Bona King equalled the record for the 25 yards schoolgirls' championship, and was very unfortunat© to foul the rope when contesting the final with Miss Henderson, who broke the record.
