STAFF RESIGNATIONS
Why So Many Nurses Resign at Hastings An explanation of why there were aiore resignations from the nursing staff of the Hastings Memorial Hospital was sought at yesterday 's meeting r>£ the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board by Dr. J. Allan Berry, who expressed the opinion that the board received resignations every 10 days or so. He was told bv the ittanaging-secretary, Mr E. T. Bees, that the proportion of resignations was far greater at Hastings because the nursing staff there eomprised only staff -nursesj who had the legal »ight of resignation, which was denied trainees at the Napier Publie Hospital. Dr. Berry 's question was raised when the board was considering the return of the nursing staff s, which contained the information that 30 resignations had been received from the Hastings Memorial Hospital during tho past year, as against 24 from tho Napier Public Hospifal. "Mr Nor'the (assilstant-secxetarv) prepared this return, and it is perfectlv correct," said Dr. Berry. "We se'em to have resignations every 10 days or so from the; Hastings Memorial Hospital, and I would like an explanation." "That ia easily. given," replied Mr Bees. "There are only staff-nurses ,at Hastings, while three-quarters of the Napier nurses are trainees, who can't resign. The proportion ,ol! resignations is, therefore, far greater at the' Hastings Memorial Hospital than at. the Napier Hospital, for staff-nurscs are at libcrty to resign if they desiro." Mr C. Duff: Dr. Berry has raised quite an important question, and 1 think our matron (Miss L. M. Croft) should report to us. Dr. Berry: She has done so. She says that it is impossible to get staffnurses, also. Mr Duff: Still, I think it would not bo out of place if the matron and superintendent reported to the board if an explanation is eonsidered necessary. But I don't think Dr. Berry quite undefistands the position. ,Dr. Berry: Yes, I do now. The diacuBsiou., then 2ft£aeL
