More Recruits Come Forward itecruiting for the Territorial Army during January was another record, being the best for that month in any year since 1921. Eeturns show that 2993 recruits were obtained against 1192 in January of 1936, an increase of 151 per cent and 147 recruit# more than in December.

U.S. Short of Steel The U.S. War Department has announced that the eonstruction qf six uew destroyers and three submarines Uas been halted owing to the steel shortage. Fears are expressed that two battleslups will also be delayed. Steel manufacturers opposing the Walsh-Healey law specifying wage and hour standards, refused to bid. The navy needs at least 25,000,000 of steeel. Not even the keels of the destroyers and submarines liave been laid although some of the contracts were let on December 1 last. Body Recovered A fifth body frCm the airliner which plunged into the sea on February 10, was reqovered from the mud at the bottom of the bay. An Oakland (California) newspaper quotes an unnamed aviation expert as saying he is positive eleven occupants of the airliner were alive after the crasli and tried vainly to swim ashore.
