EMBARGO OPPOSED
Mr R. Chilcott Says New Blood is Wanted COSTS OF IMP0RTING An opponent of the live stock embargo on direct importations from Britain, particularly where pigs are concerned, is Mr JR. Chilcott, the wellknown Waikato breeder, who adjudicated in the pig classes at the Dannevirke A. and P. Show this week. Mr. Chilcott opposbs the embargo because, he maintains it penalises the producer, and is also holding back the devefopment of tlie pig industry in. this Dominion Mr. Chilcott, although he.occupies a ieading position among the pig-breeders of the Dominion, does not hold the view that fresh blood is nofc needed in the pig population of Now Zoaland. Only recontly Mr. Chilcott imported a boar from hliigland and has high hopes that it Will prove of material benefit in his breeding operations. Mr. Chilcott's romarks anent the embargo wero prompted by the entry of larg© Black pigs at the Dannevirke Show, "New blood is badly needed in this breed," said Mr.- Chilcott, as he comniented on liis judging to the writer. "With the Large Blaeks, the need is very pronounced. The breed is almost at a dead ettd as far as breeding is concerned, and, to build them tip, we must- get fresh stock from England." Mr. Chilcott menticfned that the New Zealand Covernment was^very keen to grade up the quality of the pigs in New Zealand. "It is no good otlr trying to do this unless we can improve our stock," he commented. "The present embargo is penalising the producer. The expense of importing a boar from England under the preseht system is about £120, but the cust should be no greater than £60 if direct importations Were permitted. With the embargo it means we have to_ charge the farmer twice as niucli for stock; as would otherwise be the case." Ci g 3E - i 1 5 5 ■ —
