MR W. G. BUTCHER
The death occurred at Maketu on Monday of Mr. Williani George Butcher, the first settler in the area between Rotorua and Taupo. In 3896 his father, Mr. H. R. Butcher, of Christchurch, boughf the Strathmore Estate of 48,000 acres and placed his son in charge. Extensive improvementa were undertaken and large numbers of shdep, cattle and horses were carried. In 1912 about half the estate was sold to Mr. Wilfred Stead, who afterward sold it to the Government, this pa'rt of the estate now being known as the Reporoa Soldiers' Settlement. Mr. Butcher took a keen interest in all matters for the benefit of the distriet and was its first justice of the peace. After the sale of the balance of the estate to Waikato buyers some 18 months ago Mr. Butcher retired to his home at Maketu, where he had since lived'. He was a brother of the late Mr. H. F. Butcher, a well-known business man of Napier some few'" years
