Further Discussion on Jull Park Scheme

WAIPAWA, This Day. The monthly meeting of the Waipawa Borough Council was held this evening, the Mayor, Mr C. G. E. Harker, presiding over Messrs F. Eagle, H. T. Limbrick, F. R. Furminger, J. Barker, E. MacGregor, and W. M. Murray. The Boroughi Overseer, Mr. R. Petherick, was also in attendance. The Minister of Housing wrote in connection with the councii's application for a housing survey. — The Mayor reported that further information Had now been furnished by one of the department's inspectors, and the housing committee could now proceed. Mr G. K. Holdsworth wrote complaining of the unsatisiactory state of the Bush drain. — The overseer l'eported that a portion of the drain had been done, but as there >vas still water in the drain it was impossible to complete the work. Mr C. H. Critchley complained of overcharge in gas accqunt. — Left in the hand of the gas committee, "with power to act. The Transport Department advised that certain of the councii's by-laws r'elating to traffic had been dis-ailowed.— • The Mayor stated that these by-laws-would be replaced by uniform national by-laws. Mr. N. J. McKay, borough solicitor, wrote asking what steps sbould be taken in the niattwr of legalisatiou of the street frontago to a small section of Alain street property be.ing transferred from Corskie Bros, to Limbrick Bros.— Mr Limbrick said ,he understood that the area involved >vas very . small, and the position had arisen through the building having been erected behind the proper road line. The Mayor said that the matter would have to be rectified, and the question was whether the council should take steps to have the area dedicated, or whether this was the concern of the parties. The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and deputy-Mayor for attention. • The certifying officer wrote advising that ' four eligible men could now be employed under Scheme 13 with the board's subsidy of £ 2 5/-, and that arrangements had been made to transfer the remainder of the unemployed men to sustenance. Conditions of employemnt and rates of pay were submitted.— -The Mayor said that the council had authority. to select the men to be engaged by the council, and the , scheme would come into operation as from February 15. .Work on Jull Park The Overseer reported that good progress had been made in Jull Park in the past week. The lily pond and. steps had been completed and the grounds cleaned up generally. It would Jepend a great deal on the fencing to be erected how long men would have to be employed. He thought four men for three weeks would be sufficient. The Mayor said it was for the council 'to decide whether the scheme should be adopted. The rate of pay would be £4 per week up to March 1, after which award rates of pgy would rule. The councii's share wquld be 35/- per week. Alr Eeagle said that the scheme appeared satisfactory, but he thought the plan of the park should be finaiised before any scheme was adopted. The Overseer said that there was not a great deal which could be done until the plan was adopted. The council resolved to meet on Fri-
day evening to decide on the work to be done on the park. Mr Limbrick was in favour of a subsidy scheme being adopted. The gas manager was granted his annual leave as from the beginning of March. Mr Eagle stated that the Traffic Inspector had seen him . and intimated that he was* prepared to carry on wliile he continued to reside in the borough, and suggesting that the council should communicate with the Transport Department as to his position in view of Ixis transfer to their employ.— The Mayor said that a suggestion had been inade of co-operation between the eounty and the borough, but such a course would be subject to Government approval. Permissimi was granted for use of Ooronafion Park on such date as may be decided for the combined Returned Soldiers' picnic. Mr Limbrick said he thought the date would be February 28. Ths Mayor reported tha't the waterworks committee had discussed the proposed water scheme with the Lindsay settlers, who were . to ^ discuss the matter further with the Overseer. The Overseer aclvised that as yet he had not been able to arrange a meeting. The Mayor said he had also seen Alr VVhitc, Otane representative ou the .Patangata County, who .would take an opportunity of discussing the proposal with the Overseer, and then place' the matter before" those' cOncerned. Saturday nights, and suggest that extra lights be installed, which could be turned on only' on iate nigli.ts. — The /matter is to by investigated. The Traffic Inspector reported that one cyclist had been prosecuted for riding a lightless cycle, and one prosecution wks pending against a motorcyclist for riding .'on the foot-path.
