Driver Holds Brake Till Hand Crushed LITTLE DAMAGE DONE

INVERCARGILL. Last Night. WMle carrying on shunting opera' llons at the Bluff xailway yards this afternoon two engines collided at the pointa of a loop line and one which was drawing a rike of woel-laden trucke was derailed. The driver, W. W. Porter, of Invercargill, suffered a badly crushed hand, but the flreman, 0. Martin, jumped elear and waa unhurt. Both had a narrow eicape.from serious injury. The train for Invercargill had just b^en assembled in the yards and the engitie was proceeding along the loop line preparatory to backing into the main line when it met a shunting engine at the points. The impact badly damaged the cab of the smaller engine (the Shunter) which was turned over and derailed. Little or no damage was done to the other engine. An eye-witness said: " We saw the fireman jump clear a moment before the impact. Porter evidently saw the danger but was unable to get- clear. He fcrouched down in the cab of his engine {holding on to the brake. The impact lcaused the back of the cab to be push|ed forward against the boiler and jPoiter's hand was caught and crushed." i The injured man was brought to the jSodthland hospital at • Invercargill. A Jbreakdown train was sent to Bluff from Invercargill and the damaged enarine lifted and the line cleared.
