TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD DISCUSSES NEW IDEAS FOR YEAR'S ACTIVITIES
That ten minutes of the programme at each monthly meeting of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild be devotod to a talk on some topical subject doaling with national or civic- life, givcn by a member, was a suggestion mad" by Mrs H.. I^vell-Smith for the forthcoming year, at the Guild meeting yesterday. Mrs Lovell-Smith also suggestcd that niembers of the Guild attended the Borough Council meetings and thug keep themselves abreast of civic iceas. Jioth suggescions were lnuch discussed by the membois present and it was decicied that aometliiiig of the natui'tj of the first psuggestion, though lioiJ at each meetmg} be included in the programe at tne discretdon of the committee. The second suggestion was thought excellent, aud should be reierred to all members at tiie next meet. ing. Members of the Guild had met iu the Oddfellows' Hall, for the pui'pose oi makmg piuns for the annuai meetmg, whicli is to be held on March U. lUe stage was uright/ly decoi'ated with lai'gte bowls of golden and yeilow flowers, marigolds, gailiardias and cannaa. arranged with asparagus fern. On the president's tabie was a vase of golden rosebuds and maidenhair fei'n and tliere sat the chainvoman, Mrs A. F. Glenny, and the secretary, Mi's h. Deans. Mrs A. F. Gfenny welcomed evoryone after the summer holidays and expressed pleasure at having such a good nuniDer at a puiely business meeting. A letter of appreciation for the efI'orts of the Townswomen's Guild with regard to tne Health Stamp Campaign was rectived and Mrs Glenny thanked Mrs Jenkiiisoii, who had oi'gamsed the Guild elfort. A letter of thanks from the Hawke's Bay Children' s Honies for Christmas cheer from the Guild was also received. It was decided to forvvard a' letter oi congyatulationa to Miss Jerome SX'eneer, O.B.E., who oi'ganised The I'ownswomen'e Guild and was a member of the Hastings Guild. On Thursday next the Northern Hawke s Bay Federation of Women'a Institutes is having a garden paity at the showgrounds and a special invrtation to Guild inembera and • their triends vvas received. Members were reminded that nominations for committee would be received up to February 25; aiso that the various circle meetings which commence shortly would be advei'tised iu the paper; Mrs Glenny thanked members of the Sunshine -Circle, under the leadership of Mrs C. P, Hopkins, for carrying on their good work of visiting the sick t-hroughout the summer. This circle had given toys to 40 deserving children at Christmas and had taken flowers to the patients at the hospitai, these being very much, appreciated. The Guild members have decided to hold a concei't on April 1 instead of in February, as was formerly arranged. This will be an open eveningi and is the first effort made by the Guild to l'aise funds so it is hoped to have a very large audierteft. "This is the first time that we havo met iu February," said Mrs A. F, Glenny, "and it is with the object of giving the members a chance to disouss mattei's pertaining to the Guild. We want everyone to take an interest in the annuai meeting and to nominate members for the committee., "The object of the Guild is to encourage the education of women to enable them as c-itizens to make their best contribution to the common good." Mrs Glenny said she had been chairwornan since the inception of the Guild and, as she felt it unwiso that oue person should remain in office too long, she hoped that members would consider a new ehairwoman. She had felt it a great privilege and joy to know so many townswomen and she thanked everyone, especially the committee. for their support. After tea the members discussed suggestions for the new year and the meeting closed with the tingingi of "God Defend New Zealand."
