FIVE MILLION CLUB
First Branch Formed in Napier 0THERS PR0P0SED The fxrst branch of the New Zealand Five Million Club was set up in Napier last night following an address to a representative audience on the. subject "The Population of fbe Dominion" by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P. It is hoped that other branches of the organisation will he forxned in Hastings and other centres as they are visited by Mr. Barnard. At the eonclusion of the address, Mr Barnard moved the establishment of the branch to cxnsider the mater of the population of the country first in regard to natural increase within tfij. Dominion itself, and secondly with reference to the increasing of the population by means of carefully-selected immigrants from Great Britain, and perhaps from the northern European countries. He added that it would be the object of the club to institute careful research into the openings for immigrants and to ensure that not only did they have a proper welcome but that they were cared for after arrival. The motxon was seconded by Dr. A. B. B. Biggs, who asked that consideration should be given to the possibility of reducing the cost of living in order that the attractiveness of New Zealand to immigrants should be increased. The motion was carried unanimously. The following committee was eleeted : Messrs L. O. Friend (chairman and convener), T. B. Ferguson, D. B. MgRae, Y. E. Sanders, L. C- Willis, H. H. Wylie and N. H. West.
