Driver Buried Beneath Pine Logs MIRACUL0US ESCAPE

WANGANUI, Tint Day. Afc the junction o£ the Warrengate and Fordell roads this morning Alfred Hughes, of Wanganui, the driver ot a lorry owned by Mr W. J. Polsonj M.P. laden with timber, had a miraculous escape. Mr Hughes was admitted to hospital suffei'ing from an injured ankle, cuts to the forearm, general abrasions and shock. Th© lorry collided with a car containing five Castlecliff residents proceeding to work on the railway doviation at Fordell. Both vehicles wero badlv wreclred. The lorry struck an electric-light pole, Mr Hugjhes being tossed under heavy pine logs. Fortunately, he landed in a ditch, the sides giving h'rn protection. A timber-jack had to be used to release him. The occupants of the car escaped with cuts and bruises. Another car owned by a Wangaehu resident leit the road at Reid'a hill, beyond Fordell last night and was hurled 300 feet down a bank. As far as is ascertainable, the driver escaped injury. The police are investigating.
