Australian Visitors at Hastings LAST NIGHT'S EVENTS
A first-class night'a bporting entertainment was provided at the Maddison Baths, Hastings, last night, wheu the speoial open carnival arranged by the Heretaunga Swimming and Life Saving Club in lionour of the visit of | the Australian surf life-saving teain i ivas held. There was an excellent attendance, the covered stand being fully occupied, and it was indeed fortunate that additional temporary accomrnodation was' arranged for there were few vacant places elsewhere round the pool. In view of the special occasion it was fitting that the events ehould prove exciting, compet-ition being exceptioually keen in every event, this applying to the heat« as well as the finals. Though the visitors were not successful % securing rtiany honours they neverthoiess took a prominent pau, the 1€0 yards and the 220 yards findiug them strongly represented. lutense excitement was created iu both thtsa events, tho visitors as well aa the uanners receiving great ovations from the crowd. The two "titbits1* of the evening were the solo swim against time by Sioi'.n, tho young Maori swimmer from Dannevirke, who was desonbed as "the fas'.os+ thing in the water that New Zealand has produced." He covered the iOO yards 111 65 'i {'■secs. The exhibition of surf life-saving by members of the visiting team, the fine standard methods of reiease and res* cue as practised in the surf in Australia being displayed to the obviols interesc of the spectators. ■ The final event of the evening wa« the second meeting of the Australian team with the Hawke's Bay water polo team and on this occasion the visitors were successful in scoring a win by two goals to one after a particulai'iy bright, fast and interesting game. Prior to the staging of the lengthy and varied programme the Mayor and patron of the club, Mr G. A. Madtiison, extended a cordial and waiau wei come to the visitors, and recalled the visits made in reCent yearg of Rugby, crickot and tennis representativea from Australia to Hastings.
