CRICKETERS' DRINKS
"SOFT" BEVERAGES ONLY
THE QUEENSLAND RULE Whether their tastes run to something else or not, players in representative cricket matches in Brisbane will be served only with soft drinks when the "waiter" comes on to the field with his well-laden tray, writes J. H. Fingleton in the Sydney Sun of Jan. 24. The Queensland Cricket Association has ruled intoxicants out, and though the new rule was put into force during the Shield match against Victoria, there were no complaints. Now and 'again in the past, a player has asked for something stronger than cordials to be put on the 12th man's tray, and he has got it. It will be no use asking in future. Beer has also been eliminated from the supply of refreshments left in the players' rooms. Sueh a rule, naturally, can apply only to the Queensland side. The 12th man of the visiting side is responsible for making up the drinks and if a player asks for a special drink that drink, with his captain consenting, must be taken out to him. It would have nothing to do with the Queensland Cricket Association and any first-class Australian captain would see that the needs of his bowlers were observed.
