ESKDALE GATHERING
The first Women's Institute meeting for the New Year was held at Mrs Brown's xesidence, where a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Among a few visitors were Mrs Osborne (Northern H.B. Federation. secretary and Tongoio president) and Mesdames Lowe and Collins (Tongoio members. Mrs Osborne gave details of the Federation garden party to be held at Tomoana showgrounds on February 18. A letter of congratulation was sent to Miss Spencer on her being honoured with' the O.B.E. It was with sadness that members heard of the death of Mrs Jas. Bibby, Waipawa, the composer of the New Zealand Women's Institute song. Expressions of sympathy were forwarded to Miss Bibby and relatives. It was decided to hold the annual flower. show on March 13. Several members offered to donate prizes. Tho annual meeting (March) is to be held at "Hedgeley" this year. The motto for February is : "He who never makes mistakes, seldom makes anything", and roll eali: "Suggestion for the coming year." The monthly competition was "Something new from something old" and there were only four entrfes. Miss Blair was first Mrs Williams second, and Mrs Conway third. Five blooms were entered in the competition resulting : Mrs Williams 1, Miss Clark 2, Miss Blair 3. Mrs Collins won a potato competition and Mrs Spence a treasure hunt. A memory test was also won by Mrs Spence. J)elicious afternoon tea, and ioe-creams were served by the hostess, Mrs Brown.
