fo-morrow's Prospects
(By Telegraph—
HAWERA, Feb. IV. With such splendid acceptances, the prospects for the opening of the Egmont meeting, to be held at Hawera to-morrow and on Saturday, are of the very brightest, and the fixture will be the best held in the province since the days of the boom ; that is, always providing the weather is favourable. . The course at Hawera is in excellent order, with a rich sole or grass, so it is capable or providing excellent going when 'other courses may be either too hard or too wet. The club remains loyal to the win-and-place system of betting, Of the many good horses handicapped above the minimum in the Egmont Oup, all but Martara paid up, this three-year-old now being treated to a spell. The field is an excellent one and should provide one of the best races of the season. The top-weight, Dungarvan, has done well and as he will come in a fresh horse he must go a good 10 furlongs. Spiral is a strong possibility, for he ran two nice races at New Plymouth last week on a course that did not suit him at all, and on the roomier track he may race much better. Lowenberg filled second place in the Wellington Cup withi 8.1, and a rise to 8.7 should not hamper him. Like the topweiglit, he will come in fresh. Hazoor ran two good races at New Plymouth, and he too will be better served by this track ; he won this race two years ago, and if his New Plymouth running wa3 any criterion he may be a hard horse to dispose of on this occasion. One Whetu ran fairly last week, but may come back to his
early winter form on his home track. Grand Jury is now in excellent form, his Ashhurst, and Wanganui running indicating that he js far from a gpent light, while Taitoru' s two good seconds last week are remembered. 1 Chief Ranger, who is by a sprinting sire out of a mare by that . great sire of sprinters, Absurd, is now staying on well, his success last Saturday being . marked by courage and stamina. H© is a fit horse. Master Cyklon was a winner on the opening day at Wanganui, and, down to the minimum again in this good class, he will be thorougbly tested and may come out well. Tahurangi will find this field diSScutt, on Taranaki running, and Davistock revealed a glimpse of his old speed last Saturday. Tout le "Monde carried the Taranaki field along smartly last Satunday, but Windscreen would have to make extraordinary lmprovement to be first home. It is going to be a rare contest. The chances of Lowenberg may be favoured most over Spiral, Hazoor, Master Cyklon, Taitoru and Dungarvan, The remaining ©vents have filled very well and will furnish very interesting racing. The following are likely to be well supported: — 12.0, Ohawe Hurdles. — Beau Star. Royal Routjne, Bazaine. 12.40, Flying Handicap. — Wotan, Notium, Clessamor. 1.20, Tokaora Hack. — Cheval de Volee, Dawning Light, Erebus. 2.0, Egmont Cup. — Lowenberg, Master Cyklon, Spiral. 2.40, Juvenile Handicap — Great Hope Sheval de Volee, Ripp'le. • 3.20, Nolan Hack Cup. — Le Grand, Brazen King, The Buzzer. 4.0, Whareroa Handicap. — Friesland, Supreme Court. 4.40, Waipapa Hack. — Export, Sansfoy, Ned Cuttle.
