BRIGHT BATTING

—Press Assn,

Englishmen Hit Out At Everything PRACTICE FOR TEST

(By Telegraph-

.— Copyright.)

(Becexved 9, 8.45 a.m.) GEELONG, Feb. 8. Although they lost their wickets xapidly the English batsmen were hitting out at Geelong and treated the spectators to a fine display. The mateh ended in a draw but Engiand might have won. Eobins had a spell of excellent bowling and broke the back of the local batsmen and paved the way for a poor score. It was intended to enforce a fallowon. However Engiand acceded to a request to again bat from the public viewpoint. Verity and Worthington were uninspiring. Verity was practising in view of the possibility of being one of the opening batsmen in the Test. Following their dismissal the others hit out. Ames and Leyland coutributed fifty in twenty-four minutes. Eobins danced yards from the wicket to have a erack at the bowling while Ames showed his disdain of the fairly accurate attack and penetrated the field with powerful grace. Leyland shed his usual doggedness aiid Sims revelled in a display of hitting. Wyatt in attemptine to foilow the example of Eobins hit a ball up and lost an opportunity to secure practice. Eobins, using the breeze, tied up the local -men with leg breaks and an oceasional "wrong'un" nonpiussing the batsmen. With the end in sight The English bowlers became charitable and gave runs with longhoppers and fulltosses, allowing the last pair t.o figure in an- entertaining partnership. Scores: — GEELONG.
