(Received 8, 8.45 a.m.) vi, Feb. 7. i A wicket of varying pace and a geueral picnic atmosphere surrounding the match mac[e England's first innings against Geelong very interesting. After winning the toss the Englishpnen lost WOrthington at 14. Then Hardstaff and Verity settled down to isedate cricket but when the former sighted the ball he batted atylishly with the result that the second wicket :partnership produced 97 runs. Leyland hit everything and he and Wyatt were Isoon out, tho latter failing to score, (being caught low in the slips. Hardstaff was joined by Ames with the score at four for 140 gnd the pair played carefree cricket which at one stag9 produced 50 in 25 minutes. Nenring the century, however, Hardstaff was painfully slow and was eventually trapped leg before while attempting a> defensive forward stroke when 94.' Ames threw his wicket away. Howard, the manager, played, making several good off strokes before being stumped. i ! England's innings realised 282 in 244 Iminutes, the bowling honours going to ;the fast-medium bowlers Collins who obtained assistance from the wicket. After the pitch was rolled it was jeasier and Earnes made no impression [on the opening batsmen except Anier;son who at seven played-on Farnes but .the bails were not dislodged.
