SWIMMERS IN TROUBLE
Two Assisted From Napier Surf The need of some form of life-saving patrol on the Napier beach was agaiu demonstrated yesterday morning by at least two cases in which swimmers in difficulty were assisted from the water. There was a fqirly heavy swell running in the morning, and the beach was crowded with swimmers. The largest number were gathered in front of the baths. The surf, with curling breakera rolling in one after the other, was q difficult one except for the strongest and most experienced of swimmers, but their example apparently induced' less hardy swimmers to try their afrilft The first man in difficulties was Mt Joe Doyle. He had been swimming iu the breakers with a companion. His companiOn left the water and waa watching from the shore when he saw Mr Doyle in diffieulties and heard his eall for help. Fortunately he wgs able to attract the attention of Mr Eric Amner, an experienced surf swimmer, who swam to Mr Doyle 's aid and assisted him to the shore. Mr Doyle had soon recovered and was little the worse for his experience. A little later a 12-year-old boy was in difficulties and had to be assisted to tho 1 beach. Rp too, was little the worse for his experience. Not long afterwards a young woman, struck by a bteaker, had her knee put out of joint and was carried to the beach. She, however, had not been swimming in the breakers. The red flags were flown from the Napier Munieipal Baths in the morning.
