Selection of, Christie Cup Team "0LD BRIGADE" AGAIN
(By
Tke team to defend the challoage by Hanawatu for the Christie Cup has now been published, and cOnsists of the following: Men, "Watson, Elliott, Lowry, Eorbes, Milburn and Sharpe. Women, Mrs Milburn, Mrs Cotterill, Miss Glenliy, Misa Griffitha, MisB Budd, and Mias Evansj with Miss I. Ormond as an emergency. The eelectibh for the men's team, whichy with a couple of exceptions, might be terined "the old bri£jade," kaS eaused sonie shtprise owing to the absehee of the hames of "Wils'on, Geisen ahd Madden. Wilson, it is pre aiirned, is hot availablO. He was playing ia the Hastings tburnament, but f rom all abcoUnfe dld not take it seriousl 3y. Dr. Geisen, who is a member of the Dannevirke Club, plays a very finu game, and in the Writer's opinion is easily the best man in Hawke's Bay. He has shown good form at the tournaments at which he competed, beating Ckal-ters at Dannevirke. It must be presumed the he, too, is not avaiiable. Yoiing Blayer Missed. Madden, also a member of the Dannevirke Club, has shown good form this sea'son, and on that form would beat moi'e chembers of the chosen team thau i Would beat him. it is regrettable that a promising young player like Madden shOhld be OvOribOked ih thb matter of , ranking inatclies, espeeialiy as some of | our reptesehtatiVes are beeoniing deCid- ; edly "passe." Watson showod good form at the Hastings tournaaient. The only oecasion "Deuce" has seen Elliott ; in actibn this sbasoh was at tho Hawke's Bay Cliib's tournameht when Jie was eliminated in the iirst round of : the singles. Lowry 's form at the sev- : eral tournambhts at which he competed ! was^godd. Fbr.bes's and Milburn 's form ' on the club's courts has not been im- i pressive. Milburn competed at Wai- i pawa. Sharpe 's form this season has'; been inost consisteht. At the Hastings i Club's touriiament with Eead iie Won the championship doubles, and at Waipawa with Miss Glenny, won the combinedj defeUtiiig sbine first-clasR pairs. Form of Women. Mrs Milburn has beett consistent, if her fofm is not quite up to the standard of previous seasons. At Hastings She won the singles, beating Miss Budd in the finai after losing the first set, and with Mrs Cotterill was runner-up j in the doubles, beirig defeated by a i paif UiUeh lower on the rhnking list. At j Waipukurau She won the singles, beat- j ing Mrs Cotterill in the final, and with I Lowfy won the mixed doubles. j Mrs Cotterill 's fbrm has .beeij fair. ; At Hastings she w&s rUnner-up with i Mffe Milburn in the doubles^ but did no j good at Dannevirke, gding out first. J round in the singles and mixed doubles; j At Waipukurau She was Tunner-up to | Mrs Milburn in the singles, and with 5 Mrs Milburn wbn the doubles. Miss | Glenny appears to be playing well sincb i her return ffom Australia. Miss Budd'S form, is good this season. At Hastings She was runner-up to Mrs Milburn in the sihgles, and with MisS Ira Ormond won thfe dciiibies. MisS Evans is to bb congratulated on her inclusibn iU the team. "DeUCO" knows nothing of her fdm exbept that she defeated Miss Ira Orihond itt a rankihg matfeh. The iion-inelUsion of Mrs MawsoU in the team has caiifeed a good dehl of sUrprise and conjecturb. She did fiot play at Hastings, Waipawa or Waipukurau, but at Dannevirke she defeated Mrs Latter (Wellington), Miss Betty Dale (Tauranga), and Mrs Bita AdamS (Manawatu) in the singles, being defeated herself by Miss Plummer, wfiose play we all know. LaSt season Mfs Mawson played second in the Bay tepm With dredif. Subsequently she WaS defeated by bofh MrS Cotterill atid Miss Glenliy, at their second attfeinpts, in ranking matcheS, which redncfed her to foUrth placC; So far as "DeuCe" knows, Mrs Mawson has been asked tO play Oiliy one ranking niatcli this season and that W&s &g&inst MisS Ir& Ormond, rafiking eighth, which makes the position appear rather farcical. The selector or SelectorS can probably make matters mnre clear.
