Australian Attitude Not Too Clear POSITION OF NEW GUINEA
(Bv Telegraph
—Copyright.)
(Received 6, 8.45 p.m.) SYDNEY Feb. 6. The- "Daily Herald", in a leader, says: "The coming Imperi&l Conference, 01* discussions outside it, should provide opportunities for the Rt. Hon. J. A. Lyons, if the Government' s mind is made up, to convey that ih no circumstances will Australia consider a surrendel- of the / mandate in New Guinea to Germany, and especially to a Germany which made a treaty with J apan of which the full terms were not disclosed. "Germany has possibly done us a service by raisiug this question, because the recent official disposition in Canberra towards 'cocking a snook' at the Mother^ Country — in assertion of some local right to deny, when it suits us, the principle of Imperial co-operation — may now hecome moi'e subdued. "When the subject for discussion is lmmigration, we try to avoid it; if it be investment of British capxtal, there is ourious eagerness to prefer American; the British air-maxl scheme met with officfal opposition here, as aturdy as it was stupid, for over two years. The slogan 'Tuning in with Britain' petered out when we had converted our London loans and secured our meat export concessions. The German demand for New Guinea may set it fluttering again in Canberra,"
