LADY FRANCES RYDER'S HELP FOR N.Z. STUDENTS

The wonderfui hospitality whieh Lady Frances Ryder extends to oversea visitors to London was warmiy praised by Miss Jean Ballantyne, 'of Hastings, when writing to her relatives recently. "We are very interested in the big coneern which Lady Frances Ryde'r has organised for colonials," writea Miss Ballantyne. "Apparently her husband was once alone in the colonies and people were very good to him. In roturn for this kindness Lady Frances Ryder spends thousands a year helnin* colonials. "She has a sort of elub-room, where, if you have been privately recommended, you can go for tea, there being a large staff. "A friend of mine had an introduction to Lady Ryder and through it was invited to spend the Ohristmas bef ore ^ last at an ancestral home in Yorkshire. A short time ago we wero given two tieke ts for a musical afternoon and it was wonderfui. It was at Lady Hbward de Walden's home, whieh had been lent for a church affair. The tickets were a guinea each and we had ours given to us! It is one of the show homes with marble staircases and footmen in livery— velvet knee-breeches, etc, ' "The home is in Belgrave Square, where the Duke and Duchess of Kent live. We were walking along wondering which was their house when a door opened and out came the Duke of Kent to see a friend off. We were thrilled as we were only 3b out three yards Itiway and he looks won'drous. There were crowds of footmen hovering in the background but he was saying goodbye like any ordinary hnman being." Lady Frances Ryder gives her help chiefly to students and helps them to have enjoyment by sending invitations. -Miss Ballantyne wrote that she had been fortunate in reeeiving invitations' to several veyy delightful dances in beaqiiful homes, one home in Chelsea having belonged to Whistler. Giris who wish to enjoy a real English Christmas Lady Ryder places witb friends, and Miss Ballantyne and a friend spent Christmas at an English vicarage while another friend joined a house party at Droitwich, Miss Ballantyne has been working hard to pass several examinations and is now on the return trip to New Zealand.
