CARNIVAL RACES
"The Barb.")
Excellent Prospects for Ihe Wairoa Meeting GOOD ACCEPTANCES
(By
Everything points .to the annual race meeting this year of the Wairoa County liacing Club being a success. Theae days the success or failure of a race meeting appears to be weighed up in £.S.D., but the xaces to-morrow and Saturday also look like being a success from a racing point of view. The firstday aeceptances warrant the prediction that the various contests will furnish most interesting running. As usual, Hawke 's Bay and Poverty Bay supply the main body of the fieldsj but the two ' district races will len.d local colour and interest to both days' sport. The following is a review of the flelds:— Trial Handicap. Minnow since coniing to Hastings has been showing fair form in her trials on the track and in this company cannot but command attention. Piriiua haa but one race to his credit, when this Threadneedle gelding beat a very mediocre field; nowever he couid do no more than win. Unfortunately Sunny Blonde got tangled up in a fence and will not start the first day or maybe at the meeting. Taupiri is hard to follow when one recalls her form at the last Woodville meeting, for instance, Fine Stiteh once gave promise which? has not been fulfilled, but in this field her chance cannot be altogether dismissed. Tycoon and Ballyculane havo won, but not for some time. Hinepit's best in .two seasons' racing was a secoud to Pirima last October. Three that may appeal to investors are Minnow, Taupiri and Fine Stitch. District Hack Handicap. Jazz King and Night Speaker, both veterans, have won this race previously and will still be recognised as serious contenders. . Euinette is fair, whild Acranna is one that may cause troublc to other bidders for' this "local Derby." Mahala when trained down this way was disappointing, but it is stated that this full sister ,to Mata Hari is showing improvement.' Of the others Pylon and Grey Mollie may do best. There is not a great margin of merit between the best and the worst but perhaps most money will be carried by Acranna, Euinette and Jazz King. Wairoa Gup. Big Dook has won at some of our more important meetings but this aeason has hardly shown the form of last autumn. However, now getting on Lowards the same stage of the racing /ear, an improvement may be expeoted. Legatee, a winner over a inile at the last Auckland meeting, will not be overlooked by speculators. Charade may not be on hand, unless there has been a iast-minute change of ' intentious. Hunting Mars is a good hack but only up to seven furlongs. Pennycomequick is a three-year-old filly that may surprise. Lucullus Lad on latest showings has trained off. Even the aged Bothwell is a possibility, as he alwaya racce well on the Te Kupenga course. Lady Wessex, Flying Mimic and Blue Garter, at the bottom of the list, may have to be considered in the summing-up. The handicapper has not made the selectors' task very easy, but perhaps they may vote for Legatee, Big Dook and Flying Mimic. Xe Kupenga Hack. Quite a few of the acceptors have other engagements, thus making it diffieult to suggest possible favourites. As said before, Charade may not be there. Gay Hunter on his Hastings running must be considered seriously. Small Boy was second at Auckland — good form. Hatuma, though now up to 9.3,' is still in the picture. Hamarin has a few thirds of late to her credit in fair hack company. En Vidette is one that may cause a surprise, ag he can handle a mrte comfortably. Tractile, Wananga and Trailer must each have a chance on form, as all have been winners this season. Publie opinion may be divided Between Gay Hunter, Small Boy and Hamarin.
Maiden Scurry. Here is the biggest Held of the day, with plenty of runners but little form to help to a decisiqn among them. Looking down the list, one cannot say that any one of the entrants possesses better form than another. Perhaps the best backed will be Eoyal Spades, Seyfried and Shanl. Ormond Handicap. Do Friend is one to ponaer over, as also is Hunting Mars, if not started in the Cup. Gasman has been disappointing this season. On the second day of the last Hawke 's Bay meeting many thought that had Fossicker had better luck at the start and in the running he would have beaten Peter Beckford. As Peter ran second to Laughing Lass at Wellington last week, Fossicker must appeal. Quake always runs a good race, but is nothing of a "moral." Blygaiu has a penchant for minor placings. Flying Mimic may do best of the remaining trio. Three that should not be friendless are Fossicker, De Friend and Hunting Mars. Kaawa Hack Handicap. On account of prior engagements this race is another diffieult one to sum up. Providing they go to the post, monej should not be wanting for Huntette, Fossicker and Tractile.
