Man Pleads Guilty in Supreme Court

DUNEDIN, Last. Night; In the Supreme Court the case in! which William George Thomas was toi have stood hia trial on a charge of obitaining money by false pretences and1 ialso on a charge of escaping from prisOn, itook an unexpected turn when accusedl decided to plead guilty. Thomas wasi remanded for sentence. The evidence tendered in the lower court showed that he had Becured a sum of £139 from a widow in Dunedin by| falsely representing to her that he had a chemist's business in Adelaide and * sum of money on fixed deposit in thej Bank of New Zealand. He became «n-j gaged to the widow in February as thal result of a matrimonial advertisementi which he inserted in a local paper. Th# woman later mortgaged her home and gave him £139 to enable him to releastt his money from the bank.
