WELLINGTON, Last Night. A number of distinguished visitors to New Zealadn were the guesta of the Government at a State luncheon in Parliament Buildings to-day over which tbe Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage pre»sided. The guests were Captain the Rt. Hon. Sir Basil Brooke, O.B.E., M.C., M.P., Minister for Agriculture in Northern Ireland and Lady Brooke; Senator ihe Hon. A. J. MoLachlatt, Post-master-General for the Commonwealtb of Australia and Mrs McLachlan, and the Hon. J. T. Hyland, M.L.A., Assistant Minister for Agriculture in Victoria. In extendihg a welcom© to the visitors, the Prime Minister mentxoned the ties of kinship and tradition that bound the Empire countries together and the value of meeting people face to face. He referred to the coming 1mperial Conference and said that all their interests were common and their objectives were much the same and, when they got together around the conference table (he was optimistie enough to think they would aim for even bigger thinga and. accomplish more tban had ever been accomplished in the history of the British Empire. In reply, Sir Basil Brooke said there was no difference between Britishere in any part of the Empire. They were all influenced by a feeling that the democracy they were fostering was most useful in the creation of any Empire. It was the greatest influence for good and the greatest influence for peace, Senator McLachlan and Mr Hyland added their appreciation of the courtesy extended them, Mr Hyland paying a tribute to the manner in which the Government was tackling the Unemployment problem, particularly its placement scheme.
