"RUBBISH" FRUIT
Federation Much Averse to its Being Marketed GROWERlS AND GRA0ING Endorsement of the comment upon the quality of the samples of apples forwarded by Mr. F. E. Nottage, of Tasman, Nelson, following upon the article in the "Herald-Tribune" regardxng the unsatisfactory nature of a consignment of apples, was given this morniiig by Mr. C. G. Wilkinson, Hawke's Bay xepresentative lof tihe New Zealand Fruitgrowers ' Federation, when reporting on the delfberations of the advisory committee who examined the samples which Mr. Nottage says came from a Hawke's Bay or» ch&rd. Mr. Wilkinson said that the committee was in general agreement that the apples in question were not the type of fruit that should be marketed. ti was not known, however, whether the apples had gone direct to the fruiterer or through some auctioneering firm or other recognised customary channel of trade. "The federation i« very much against this type of fruit being placed on the markets," said Mr. Wilkinson, "and it is one of our chief aims to prevent the sale of 'fubbish' fruit." Mr. Wilkinson added that the committee regretted that so much publicity had been given to the origxnal comment in the article in the "HeraldTribune," for it was felt by the committee that the Comment was a little unfair, in as much as it was generally recognised that in all diatricts there Were a certain number of growers who did not pay the care and attention they should to the grading of their fruit.
