Gisborne Telegraph Engineer ASSISTANCE AFTER QUAKE
(Pv ieieurapjx
GISBORNE, This Day. After four years in Gisborne as telegraph engineer, Mr E. Walpole has received notice of his transfer to Napier, the town from which he came 60 Gisborne. Mr. Walpoie's position in Gisborne will be hlled by Mr J. C. Greig, of tbe Hamilton office, The trausiers will take effect in about a month. In regard to experience, Mr Walpole oonsiders himself one of the most, for^unate officers in the service in that he was in Hawke's Bay at the time of the jarthquake in 1931. He was stationed vn Hastings then and the installation of the automatic exchange was almost coinplete." After the earthquake there wero many repairs to be effected to the service and then he went to Napier •xs assistant-engineer. At Napier almost complete reconitruction o.f the apparatus was necessary and a variety of work had to be carried out expeditiously. Underground and aerial cables had to be renewed and /n a large number of cases whole build•ngs and blocks of buildings had to be /e-wired. The experience gained in the oionths during which this work was cairied out was invaluable. During the period Mr Walpole has Oeen stationed in Gisborne no large jobs have been undertaken, but he has found much to interest him in the work of eliminating radio interference in this district He considered the position unique owing to the large number of d.c. motors in opei'ation compared with other towns of a similar size.
