Three men at the Club were discuss ing surprises, pleasant and otherwise, and many and hair-raising were the stories related. "Why, think," said one, "of the scare reeeived by the N.Z. fruiterer who found a deadly scorpion nestling ou the top of a case of baaanas. " "That's nothing, " eountered the second man, "What about that cliap who found a Gernian rnine on tlie beacli, and tapped it with a hammer before he realised its nature." Their companion cliimed in with a confident smile, "Well, I have a pleasant surprise — happening to-day— that will beat those hollow.
