Crowds numbering thousands, mostly women, stampeded at the sight of .the bride, Many fell on the roadway^ which wet# littered with hats, umbrellas and bags, and others were crushed agaiast the railings, screaming hysterical^y, The police cordons were broken, but oxder was xestored. by mounted police, BernaTd Eitzalan-Howard, the 18th Duke of Norfolk, was bonx on May 30, 1908, and succeeded his father in 1917* He is the Premier Duke and Hereditary MaTshal of England. The House of Howard dates from at least 973, the early name being Hereward. In 1308 Sir Henry Howard was Ghief Justice of England. Sir John Howard was crcated Duke of Norfolk in 1483-^--Sha3(e-spear e 's " J ockey of Norfolk. ' ' Philip, Earl of Arundel, was attainted in 1590 and died in the Tower on October 19, 1595. The Duke owns about 49,000 acres of land and his residences include Norfolk House, St. James' Square, London; Arundel Castle, Sussex; Derwent Hall, Der.byshire; and Beech Hill, Sheffield, At the beginning of 1930 he turned hie estates into® a company called the Fitz-alan-Howard Estates, Limited. Miss Strutt, who is aged 20, is th# only daughter of the Gountess of Rose« bery by her first marriage to Lord Belper.
