Two Good Centuries Recorded WEST END BEATEN
(Noteis by "Willow.") The final game in the second) series of the Hastings mid-weelc crlcket competition wero concluded last Thmsday under ideal condltions. The wickets wero ln good order and the ontfleld fast. West End, who have led the competition over the second round, were heaten "by Heretaunga, who now go into Ihe lead. Methodist recorded their first win of the season hy gaining •an outright win over United With a lead of eight runs on the first, innings, West End started their seocnd innings, and hatting one man short could score only 128 runs. The principal scorers were Halligan (44), Ladbrooks .(17), Eosenberg (16),. Atfthur (12) and ilartin (19). Eequiring 132 runs to score an outright win, Heretaunga were more than cqnal to the task, ecoring the required nurnber with four wickets !n hand. The fs-jfcessful batsmen for Heretaunga were Giorgi (31 not out), Kitt (31), Shuker (28), Eonse (16) and Jhgram (15 not out). Out of the six wickets that fell, four of the batsmen were run out, due to misunderstanding by the batsman ahd al-ert fielding by West End. Dhited and Methodists, On No. 2 wicket; replying to Methodisfc's first innings score of 239, United had three wickets down for lorf at the conclnsion of the first day s nlav the not out batsman being Mahoiiey (83)- Gontinuing their mninga United scored dnly 242, only three runs ahead of juutiiuu.. being unbeaten at 141. Bowling for Methodist, Wilkins took four wickets for 82 xuns and. Broadliurst three ■Lu* 24. • ln their second strike Methodist declared with five .wickets down for 168 runs. Wilkins (114) and Ball (35) were the principal scorers. Mahoney (two for 50) and Mitehell (two for 58) bowled
best for United. United 's' second visit to the wickets realised only 84 xuns. Methodist thus won by 79 xuns. McNab (34 not out) and Swallow (13) wete United '» successful batsmen. Bowling fox Methodist Ball captured six wickets fox 29 xuns and Uosnell three for 31. Positions oi teams. . The positions of the teams are now m follow: — Heretaunga : 17 points West End 16 points Unitfid • . . • • 10 points Methodist 7 points Glancss. The third series of games will be only one-day matches. It was pieasing to see Wilkins among the run-getters last week. Although he gave several chances, his runa were well made. His eifort was largely responsible for Methodist 's win. Mahoney can still consider himself the most eonsistent bat in the midWeek competition. Unbeaten at 141, his display was good to watch. Ladbrook (West End) has improved % lot in his batting. He is a decided tsset to his team, ,
