RYE-CORN STRAW
Unusual Consignment From Hastings USED FOR HORSE COLLARS -* An unusual consignment has been made from the Hastings railway station, .this consisting of two trucks of rye-corn straw. This consignment arranged by Mr E. C, McDermott, of Hastings, and is going to an Auc-k-land firm of saddlery and harness manufacturers where it will be used for the stuffing of horse collars. Speakin^ to a "Herald-Tribune" reporter this morning„ Mr McDermott stated that the harness trade usually v experienced considerable difficulty in New Zealand in securing adequate supplies of this straw, and this year he had arranged for a Bupply from Hawke's Bay. The consignment made totalled seven fcons, and was off approximately two acres of land. The value of the crop was £7 a ton, and this consignment grossed £49 — a refcurn of approximhtely £25 to the acre. Rye-corn is not to be confused with perennial rye^grass, as it is a cereal, and the other a pasture plant. Ryecorn is grown extensively in England and America, and is used as a forage T".p, and for the manufacture of rye .
