DIVOTS

The yearling saies at Trentham showed that, as usual, Australian buyers were prepared to pay good prices for likely lots. The ex-Hawke's Bay owner, Mr E. J. Watt, gave top price of the sale for the Limond (imp) — Helen colt. This is a well-bred chap, and ' a good looking one, and may prove to the same owner as good a bargain as has Gold Rod. • • • Hawke's Bay breeders secured satisfaetory returns for most of their lots. The Siegfrieds brought good priees, but might have done even better if he had had a few two-year-olds like Brunhilde to represent him. His progeny are good, but most of them take time, and many buyers look for a quick return of their money. • * • A Hawke's Bay buyer, Mr C. P. Sliields, secured the imported horse Poinbal, by Pommerh — Lindal, for 140 guineas. This is a sinall price for a horse of his breeding, for he is a half brother to Limond. But Pombal has not so far been a great stud snccess, aud I am inclined to think that he will gain inuch more distinction from the second generation of his progeny than from the first. He h'ag a wealth of staying blood running through his veins and his daughters should he very suceessful as brood mares. • * * * The Grasper has changed hands and goes to the South lsland, Mr A. S. Elworthy, of Timaru, having. secured him' for 140 guineas. In* his new home The Grasper is likely to pa.y his -way. * Amourette, an 11-year-old mare, by Psychology (imp) — Loveloek- (sister to. Wofa'n's dam , Left) was- sold at Trentham on Friday for 22^gns. Amourette must surely have looked very sick when " she entered the sale ring, for the price is a very poor one for a mare bred on very much the same lines as Wotan.
