Invercargill Man Fined £20

INVERCARGILL, Jan. 23. John Cardna, single, labourer, appeared before Mr I'reeman, S.M., today and pleaded guilty to a charge of being found drunk in charge of a car. Senior-Sergeant Kelly^ prosecutingi, said that the accused was seen by two constables to stagger along the street at 2 a.m. and get into a rental car, which he tried to start. The car stalled and appeared to be in gear. The accused was arrested and taken to the Police Station, where the doctors certified him as unfit to drive a car. The Ma-gistrate fined defendant £20, stating: "This class of offence must be put down. It was lucky it was so early in the morning, or I would have consjdered sending you to prison-"
