THE WINNING QUALITY
* There are lives which are a succession of first laps, a regular turnover over of new leaves; there are individuals who perpetually remain 'promising,' and some whose careers soar with the epectacular flourish of a rocket and finish in a similarly inglorious fizzle. But the end of life is clearer commentary than the beginning, and to pass the last test of succoss needs a dauntless spirit. Perseverance is a virtue with homely features that scarcely fit her for the role of a siren beckoning youth. Even when we add a little verbal make-up, I doubt that we greatly heighten her appeal. During the war we spoke of 'carrying on,' in sport we talk of 'sticking. it,' in model biographies we read of 'diligence/ and in Scripturai language of 'patient continuance' and 'keeping the faith.' Whatever the term, we mean the power of eontinuous application by which the man who begins to build is able to finish. . . . He must work harder than others, he must be more courageous than others, he must persevere. Continuity is the one unbeatable quality."r— Sir Henry Bellman in "After School."
