WELLINGTON ENDS Haughty Winner Again Triumphs BIG TOTE INCREASE
fBy Telegraph-
WELLINGTON, Jau. Martara, the winner of the Douro Oup on the prevtous day, was equal to taking the big step into open company in the Summer Handicap at Trentham to-day, and he spreadeagled a very strong field of proved handicappers. Taking charge ianmediately, he never looked like losing the lead, and over the last furlong he continued to draw away to pass the post six lengths clear of Shy, who outstayed Dungarvan by a length. Ponty, winner o fthe Wellington Oup, was well enough placed all the way to the straight, but the best he could do was a moderate fifth. The Great Northern Derby winner, Essex, soon lost his position, and although he showed speed in the nuddle stages, he could finish only ninth. Haughty Winnpr again headed the two-year-olds, with the topweight, Brunhild putting up an excellent performance after gettingj away slower fchan usual. The op^ning event, the Wallaceville Highwcight Handicap, resulted in a complete boil-over, as all the place-fillers were at long odds. The weather was excellent, and ther© was. a large attendance. Except for the wind, it was an ideal day for for enjoyable racing.
The totalisator handled £69,223 for the day, compared with £48,821 last year. The total for the meeting was £185,825 10/-, against £117,766 for the three days last year, an increase of £71,059 10/-. .
