University Senate Plans National Council CO-ORDINATING B0DY

AUCKLAND Jan. 23, Comprehensive proposala for the im. provement of adult education " were adopted by the Univensity Senate. A proposai to eatablish a national ccuncil for adult education was ineluded in the repprt of a special committee which was presented by th© vice-ehancellor, Mr T. A. Hunter. Th© first part of the report stressed the impottance of the subjeqt; the second reviewed existing faeilities for adult education aud considerad meana qf developing thexn; and the third part ©ontained concreta proposals qf fh© variqus. agencies mentioned in part two. The Workers ' Educatioxxal Assoeiation was stated to b© ©J far the most important, The committee .heartily supported a recommendatioix that a special committee for Maori education should be ap» pointed, and algo expressed the opinion that there should be permanent machinery for th© co-ordinatlon Of adult educational aotivities and that th&t could be achieved only by a permanent body. In addition to the national council, the Qommittee proposed a committee of adult education in each university district. Of the five members of the council, one would b© appointed by the Minister of Education, on© would be the Director of Broadcasting, two would be appointed by the Senate and one by the Dominion conference of the Workore' Educational Assoeiation. The council would eleet its own chairman to fiom offlce for three years. Mr W. K. Morrell, in seconding the report, expresseq gratitude to the committee for its adpairable work. Mr H. D. Aekland paid a tribute to the work of the vice-chaneellor. Mr L. J. Wild stressed the importance of the Workers ' Educational Asgociation. The report was adopted.
