ACHIEVEMENT IN AGRICULTURE
IJNew Zealand has not yet reached its first century, yet within the span of one l,ong lifetime it has Qjnerged from a eountry peopled by a savage race to one capable of supplying one-third of the imports of butter, two-thirds of the imports of ch'eese, and half the imports of mutton and lamb into the United Kingdom. Furthermore, New Zealand occupies the fourth place among the world 's wool producers, maintains as many sheep per acre as Great Britain, and has the highest per caput external trade in the world. This achievement has been carried out by a population that has only very reeently reached 1,500,000 and which has been confronted with some very seriaus nutural handicaps. Mr. F. R. Callaghan, executive officer of the Plant Researeh Burean, Department of Agriculture, to the economics, statistics and social sciences and geography sections at the recent Science Congress)
