NUTRITION
In Health and Disease The old knowledge of nutrition laid particular emphasis on the value of the protein, body-building, and also the energy-producing) constituents of food, To-day, in the light of the lateat scientifio research work, we have completely reorganised our ideas on the subject — -we have, in fact, come to realise the importance of two additionat classea of food; (a) Vitamins, and (b) Mineral s^lts. The study of these rslations has led to a new conception of the cauees and signs of disease, We are particularly interested in the question of mineral salts. How many 3 people to-day, for instance, are l'ac&fng .n lime? Food is the greatest of all factors in the production and.maintenance of health. Now what are the materiais wherewith the function of nutrition is effected, and whence are they derived? They are, so tar as xu is at present known, oxygen, water, and the digestion products of protein. t'ats, carbohydrates, mineral elements and vitamins. . There may be others These foodstuffs are: (1) A good wholegrain cereal or mixture^ (2) milk and tbfe products of milk — butter, cheese. buttermilk, curds; (3) eggs; (4) green leaf vegetables; (5) root vegietables; (6) legumes ; (7) fruit; (8), meatj (9) water. « . If food be the foundation of health these foodstuffs are its foundation stones. There is, bowever, one important point — -they must be produced oi* soils which • are not themselves depleted of essential plant nutrients oi of substances sueh as iodine, needed for the normal nutrition of men ' and animals, and conveyed to them by - plants. Receiit research, • work has shown that there is a general deficienoy of iodine througbo.ut. N.ew Zealand— more marked in som'e places than in others. The number oi 'people affected by goitro is found to be in direct proportion to' the delicieney of iodine In the soil. The fruits and vegetables one buys, therefore— oven those grown in one's own garden— may all be said to , be lacking, to some extent, at any ratp, in iodine, It WaS to counteract this deficiency of iodine and oertain mineral salts so eSsential to health that, the latest scientific work has produced Thyro-done--a oombination of iodine in an assimilable form, and neftessary mineral salts of Iron, Calcium, Phosphoric Anhydri'de, Protein, Manganese. which are so invaluable for health. Thyrodone is obtainable fi'oin chemists at 4/6, with Money-back Guaran.tee. If unable to obtain. write to Thyrodone Developiuent, Ltd.. P.O.. Box 258, Invercargill.*
