Even although the Minister of Transport's "gentlemen of the road" have been instructed to be a guide and help to motorists) the Jatter still hold these inspectors in respect", A Hastings motorist who was trying out a recently acquired roadster on the HastingsNapier road near Mangateretere one night recently received an unpleasant feeling that he might, perhaps, have been driving too fast when he heard the siren of a Transport Department officer's car sounding behind him. Decelerating, he drew up, and the inspector's car pulled alongside, then stopped in front of him. With his mind Still une'asy the motorist waited for what he thought was the inevitable question as to "What speed do you think you're doing?" His feelings can be imagined when the "gentleman of tho road" approached, and in the true splrit of being a guide and mentor to motorists, polite- • ly inquired, '"'Do you know your taillight's not on?/'
