MANTILLAS WORN IN "PAUL JONES" PLAY GIVEN IN HASTINGS
Beautiful gowns and colourful suits worn by the members of the cast were one of the attractions of the comie opera "Paul Jones" which was presented by J. C. Williamson's Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company at the Hastings Municipal Theatre last evening before a Very appreciative audience. Miss Jean Orr, who played the part of Yvonne, wore many charming gowns. Her first appearance was in a frock of palest blue silk with puffed sleeves and lace bertha. Her white straw hat had a wreath of blue flowers round the crown. In Act IL her frock was of blue sprigged silk with frilis edging the hem, lichu and aleebes. Her sash was of cherry silk and cherry flowers trimmed her liat. Later she changed to a gown of white satin royale with fiouneing of lace having touches of blue.. In the final act she wore rich beige satin with bands the whole length of ner gown edged finely with royal purple. The sleeves and neek were bound to match and her sash was purple. Chopinette, played by Eileen Kelly, wore a blue and brown striped skirt with white blouse and hat. In Act 11. her froek was a shell pink and brown and in the last act Ishe wore green chiffon with finely pleated skirt and white lace bertha. Malaquena (Yalerie -Wai she.) also wore several charming Spanish gowns. In Act I. she wore red satin with a fichu of black lace and black loce mantilla. ' In the second act her rose silk frock was edged at the hem and sleeves with a black fringe and her mantilla was of black lace. In the iinal act her black silk gown, exquisitely beaded, was finished at the neck with red roses. She also woxe a red mantilla. Th§ men's suits, too, were quite worthy of description. The fisherihen 's chorus wore blue and white striped trousers, shirts, socks and caps with short blue coats and later changed to the same suits in red and white 'stripes. The girls' chorus wore blue and. white striped skirts with blue tunic tops, white blouses and hats. Others wore pleated skirts in blue, salmon, lemon or mauve with black .bodiees and white aprons. In Act II. members of the chorus wore' panniered frocks in green, gold, rose, blue or lilac trimmed with Jace stad having flowers at the neek. 'The men wore gold and cream satin with touches of deep red and the _f our members of the ballet wore pierot and pierette suits of deep and light pink striped satin with ruffles at the neck.
